Introduction to Latvia
Are you planning a trip or a vacation to Europe then why not visit the scenic beautiful and historical country of Latvia “Republic of Latvia”. Latvia located along the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Riga and the center of the three countries that make up The Baltic States. Latvia rich in historical and culture history and can trace its history back to some 9000 BC and with its thousands of historical structures and landmarks. Scattered through out Latvia you can find castles ruins that date back to the 1300s to mid 1500s. The City of Riga dates back to 1201 and founded by the Germanic Bishop Alberth of Livonia. Located in Old Riga Centre City you can see structures and churches and cathedrals’ that date back to the early to mid late 1200s with true cobble stone streets located through out Old Riga Centre City. Since the third millennium BC (3000 BC), the proto-Baltic ancestors of the Latvian people settled on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. The Balts established trade routes to Rome and Byzantium, trading local amber for precious metals. By 900 AD, four distinct Baltic tribes inhabited Latvia: Curonians, Latgalians, Selonians, Semigallians “in Latvian: kurši, latgaļi, sēļi and zemgaļi”, as well as the Livonians “lībieši” speaking a Finnic language. Even though Latvia has been occupied by different foreign countries through its history, its worst time was during the first Soviet Union invasion and occupation on 17 June 1940 to 22 June 1941 with the Nazi German Army invasion and occupation from 22 June 1941 to the autumn on 1944/1945. Then the Soviet Union second reinvasion and occupation of Latvia in the autumn of 1944/1945 until Latvia claimed de facto independence on 21 August 1991. During these periods, the Latvian people never lost their dream for total independence nor lost their culture history.
